D. Carleton Gajdusek won the Nobel Prize for his research on kuru, a fatal brain disease in Papua New Guinea. Over three decades, he brought dozens of boys from the South Pacific to live with him in the United States—an arrangement he framed in philanthropic and anthropological terms.

Years later, Gajdusek pleaded guilty to child abuse. Rachel Aviv follows the complicated afterlives of the boys he brought home, whose stories have never before been fully reported.

Read “The Children a Scientist Took Home” by Rachel Aviv: https://www.newyorker.com/maga....zine/2026/08/24/the-

What Happened to Mansa Musa’s Royal Family After the Mali Empire Fell?

Mansa Musa is widely considered the richest person who ever lived. His wealth was so vast that economists have given up trying to calculate it. During his famous pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324, he gave away so much gold in Cairo that he crashed the Egyptian economy for over a decade. But Mansa Musa didn't build this empire alone. He inherited a dynasty — the Keita family — that had been accumulating power and wealth for generations before him. His great-uncle Sundiata Keita, a crippled prince driven into exile, rose from nothing to defeat a tyrant and found the Mali Empire from scratch. At its peak, Mali controlled half the world's gold supply, built one of the greatest universities in history, and commanded a territory larger than Western Europe.

But after Mansa Musa died, everything fell apart. Weak successors, civil wars, power-hungry viziers, and rising enemies tore the empire to pieces. Within two generations, the golden age was over. Within two centuries, the empire was gone entirely. So what really happened to the family that built the richest empire in human history? And where are the Keitas today?

This is the full story of how one dynasty rose from exile and poverty to build the wealthiest empire the world has ever seen — and how they lost it all.

FAIR USE DISCLAIMER: This video is for educational and commentary purposes.

#mansamusa #maliempire #sundiatakeita #africanhistory #keitadynasty #timbuktu #wealthinhistory #richestmaninhistory #goldempire #westafrica #medievalafrica #transsaharantrade #historydocumentary #empireriseandfall #africanempires #mansa #oldmoney #dynastywealth #goldenage #sankoreuniversity

Most of you may be familiar with the story of Mansa Musa and his famous pilgrimage to Mecca, but have you heard of the last "Malian" king, whose army manufactured its own rifles while fighting a guerrilla war against the French?

The Franco-Mandinka Wars are considered by many scholars to be the first modern wars in Africa, requiring the mobilization of entire populations to assist in the war effort and involving the utilization of modern weaponry on both sides.

Take a look at the deadly and timeless tactics of West African insurgents.

Chapters:
00:00 - Intro
00:45 - A Few Kola
04:26 - A Hyena with an Empty Stomach
08:32 - Even Today, the Waters of This Stream are Red

Audio:
The Malians - AoE4 OST

Sources:
- Studies in West African Islamic History: Volume 1 By John Ralph Willis
- Firearms, Horses and Samorian Army Organization 1870-1898 by Martin Legassick
- The empire of Samori Ture on the eve of colonialism (1870-1898) by Isaac Samuel, an excellent Substack article which you can read with the link below :)
https://open.substack.com/pub/isaacsamuel/p/the-empire-of-samori-ture-on-the?utm_campaign=post-expanded-share&utm_medium=web

In 1897, Britain sent over 1,200 soldiers to destroy the Kingdom of Benin — one of the most advanced civilizations in pre-colonial Africa. They burned the capital to the ground, exiled the king, and looted an estimated 10,000 priceless artifacts including the world-famous Benin Bronzes. These weren't just works of art. They were the memory system of an entire civilization — court records, royal genealogies, and sacred ceremonial objects cast in bronze by master craftsmen whose guild had been perfecting their techniques for over 500 years.

Today, more than 900 of these stolen treasures sit in the British Museum alone. Thousands more are scattered across institutions in Germany, the United States, the Netherlands, and beyond. The British Museum still refuses to return a single piece, citing a 1963 law — while Germany, the Smithsonian, and dozens of other institutions have already begun sending them home.

This is the full story of how a kingdom that rivaled European capitals in size and sophistication was deliberately destroyed, its treasures stolen at gunpoint, and how the fight to bring them home is still being waged today.

Subscribe for more deep dives into the hidden forces that shaped our world.

#beninbronzes #kingdomofbenin #britishempire #colonialhistory #scrambleforafrica #africanhistory #benincity #edopeople #britishmuseum #culturalrestitution #stolenart #decolonization #africanart #lostwaxcasting #obaofbenin #nigerianhistory #repatriation #colonialviolence #westafricanhistory #hiddenhistory #powerandwealth #empireandconquest

As Europeans explored the interior of the African continent in the mid-19th century, the societies they encountered were often characterized as technologically underdeveloped.

Deep in the jungles of what is present-day Ghana, however, paved roads guided these explorers to large cities with multi-story buildings that rose above the tree line.

Chapters:
00:00 - Intro
01:43 - Part I: Because of War
03:38 - Treasury, Medicine, Politics
05:37 - The Great Roads
07:50 - Part II: Cormantine and Saturday
11:13 - Agriculture
13:42 - Anglo-Asante Wars
17:00 - Part III: Days of Torment
19:15 - Joint Ventures
23:00 - Rebellion, But Not the Last

Audio:
Lucid Haze - YouTube Audio Library
Origins - EU4 OST
The Dark Continent - YouTube Audio Library
I Saved Your Life - Beasts of No Nation
Surrender - Beasts of No Nation
Helicopters - Beasts of No Nation

Sources:
- Ivor Wilks.
Britain didn't discover Iraq. It invented it. After World War One, the British Empire stitched together three Ottoman provinces that had never been a single country, installed a foreign king who had never set foot on Iraqi soil, staged a referendum with a 96% approval rate, and locked in control of one of the largest oil reserves ever found. This is the full story of how Iraq was manufactured — not for the people who lived there, but for the petroleum beneath their feet.

From the secret Sykes-Picot Agreement to the Cairo Conference of 1921, from Churchill's air bombing campaigns to the Turkish Petroleum Company's 75-year concession, this video traces the real forces behind Iraq's creation. It's a story of broken promises, imperial cartography, puppet monarchies, and oil — always oil.

The consequences didn't end in 1932 or 1958. The borders drawn in hotel rooms by colonial officials who never lived in the region shaped every crisis Iraq has faced for over a century — and the world is still living with the fallout.

🔔 Subscribe and turn on notifications so you never miss a video.

👍 Like this video if you want more deep dives into the hidden forces behind global power.

💬 Drop your thoughts in the comments — did you know Iraq was engineered by the British Empire?

#iraq #britishempire #oilpolitics #middleeast #geopolitics #sykespicot #winstonchurchill #kingfaisal #colonialism #iraqhistory #oilwars #britishmandate #cairoconference #arabrevolt #mesopotamia #empireandoil #hiddenhistory #globalpower #documentary #macrofinance

How America Armed Iran — Before the 1979 Revolution Turned It Into Enemy of America

Before Iran was America's enemy, it was America's biggest weapons customer. The US sold the Shah billions in advanced fighter jets, destroyers, missiles, and surveillance aircraft — including the F-14 Tomcat, the most powerful interceptor ever built, a jet so exclusive that only the US Navy was allowed to fly it. American technicians flooded into Iranian cities by the thousands. CIA officers trained Iran's secret police. And Nixon personally signed a blank check allowing the Shah to buy any weapon he wanted, no questions asked.

Then, in 1979, a revolution swept the Shah from power — and every last piece of that American military hardware fell into the hands of a government that considered the United States to be the Great Satan.

This is the story of how America armed Iran, how those weapons were turned against American interests, and how the consequences of that decision are still shaping the Middle East today. From the 1953 CIA coup that started it all, to the hostage crisis that ended the alliance, to the nuclear program that America itself helped create — this is a chapter of history that explains more about the current US-Iran standoff than anything you'll hear on the news.

Sources and references used in this video include declassified State Department documents, Brookings Institution research, the National Security Archive at George Washington University, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) arms transfer data, and reporting from NPR, the National Interest, and the Office of the Historian.

#iran #usa #coldwar #geopolitics #middleeast #f14tomcat #shah #iranrevolution #cia #nixondoctrine #armsrace #hostagecrisis #militaryhistory #foreignpolicy #irannuclear #savak #henrykissinger #persiangulf #documentary #history
