In this episode, Agya Kwadwo comes back as Link Up’s first returning guest, this time with Mama Kenya — the “air under his wings” — to tell the fuller story behind the work, the balance, and the family foundation that has helped shape their path. They bring us through their 31 years journey of love, family, consciousness, and return.

We discuss Agya Kwadwo’s New Jersey upbringing, Mama Kenya’s roots in Newport News, Virginia, their Hampton University love story, their marriage on Hampton’s campus, military life, raising children, and the powerful role of Know Thyself Bookstore in Tacoma as a community space that deepened their consciousness. The conversation also moves through Agya Kwadwo’s first trip to Ghana, the spiritual connection to his great-grandmother, buying land for generations yet unborn, joining the xmnw Medjay Community, Mama Kenya preparing for her first Sankɔfa Journey, and the legacy they are building so their children and future generations have an ancestral option to return, grow, and live as whole Black people.

This is a conversation about raised consciousness becoming raised behavior, Black love as institution, and the work required to bring the whole family Black home.

On 24 February 1966, Ghana's military and police launched a coup that removed President Kwame Nkrumah from power while he was on a diplomatic mission to Asia. The operation, known as "Operation Cold Chop," was carried out with little resistance and brought an end to Nkrumah's increasingly centralised one-party rule.The new regime, known as the National Liberation Council, suspended the constitution, dissolved parliament, and banned the ruling Convention People's Party. In this video, South African politician, Dr Khanyisile Litchfield-Tshabalala posits that South African TV series The Polygamist presents a deeply distorted portrayal of a practice that has existed within African societies for centuries. She argues that polygamy, as traditionally practiced in many African communities, was not merely an undisciplined man pursuing multiple sexual partners at will, but a social institution governed by cultural norms, ancestral laws and communal expectations, with responsibilities and obligations toward every member of the family.

In her words, consent, accountability and the welfare of the household were central to its practice. It was not synonymous with promiscuity. Whereas she says, what The Polygamist depicts is something fundamentally different: a man driven by sexual gratification, deception and disregard for the women involved. Far from an honest representation of traditional African polygamy, she says, it is a bastardisation of the institution.
