Ghana Gold Export Ban: How Ghana is Challenging Dubai to Protect Its $20BN Gold Sector | Africa
Ghana Gold Export Ban: How Ghana is Challenging Dubai to Protect Its $20BN Gold Sector | Africa Kwabena Ofori Osei 11 Nhwɛso • 4 nna a atwam

Watch this video as Firstpost examines Ghana’s dramatic new move to tighten control over its gold trade and reshape how Africa’s natural wealth is extracted, processed, and exported. From September 1, Ghana will require unrefined artisanal and small-scale gold to be refined domestically before export, marking a major shift for Africa’s largest gold producer. Ghana produced a record six million ounces of gold in 2025, generating more than $20 billion in export earnings. The move builds on President John Mahama’s wider push for economic sovereignty and the Ghana Gold Board’s efforts to bring the country’s gold trade into the formal economy. But Ghana’s strategy goes beyond gold. Guinea, Mali and Burkina Faso are also pushing for greater state control, domestic processing and local value addition across Africa’s mining sector. The bigger battle is over who controls the gold value chain: African producers or foreign financial and refining hubs. Alyson Le Grange tells you more on Firstpost Africa.

Guatemala 1954: How the U.S. and the CIA Overthrew a Country to Save an American Fruit Company
Guatemala 1954: How the U.S. and the CIA Overthrew a Country to Save an American Fruit Company Kwabena Ofori Osei 15 Nhwɛso • 1 bosome a atwam

In 1954, the United States government and the CIA overthrew Guatemala's democratically elected president — not because he threatened American security, but because he threatened an American fruit company's profits. President Jacobo Árbenz tried to redistribute unused land back to starving peasants. The United Fruit Company, which controlled 42% of Guatemala's land and left 85% of it idle, called it communism. The Secretary of State and the CIA Director — both former lawyers and board members of that same company — agreed. What followed was Operation PBSuccess: a covert campaign of psychological warfare, fake radio broadcasts, bought priests, bribed officers, and a ragtag rebel army of 480 men that toppled a democracy in nine days. The coup reversed every reform, returned the land to the corporation, and set off a 36-year civil war that killed an estimated 200,000 people. This is the full story of how bananas, Cold War paranoia, and corporate greed destroyed a nation.
