Paul Kagame secret master plan changed everything! Few people would have imagined that Rwanda economy would become a success story twenty-eight years ago. The country had seen an unfathomably horrific genocide, in which its most capable and educated individuals were cruelly slain. Hundreds of thousands of refugees lived in the country, which was impoverished to the point of starvation. It was landlocked, with turbulent and untrustworthy neighbors like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and foes like Uganda.
Rwanda, against al odds, has recovered impressively from its catastrophic events. The country is ranked 49th out of 180 nations in Transparency International's annual Corruption Perceptions Index for 2020, making it one of Africa's least corrupt and stable governments. The president of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, has previously mentioned that he wishes to make Rwanda the "Singapore of Africa".

Fuelled by a debilitating societal inferiority complex and high levels of extreme poverty, a new trend of disturbingly obsessive brand awareness has created a booming "insecurity economy," characterised by after-market smartphone design modification, "car model upgrade" body kit installation, Indian temple hair importation, and many other dodgy activities built exclusively around exploiting the insecurities of 230 million poor people.

Already a struggling, sub-industrialised economy with IMF-imposed economic austerity, Nigeria has now become an economic opportunity for unscrupulous suppliers in industrialised countries, as Nigerians haemorrhage their money on a desperate quest to signal imaginary status to one another.

It’s time for a cultural shift. Scientific education, economic empowerment and spiritual awakening must displace obsessive, spiritually bankrupt, low-level consumerism. If this will be Africa's century, the continent needs its most populous country to break free from this psychological trap.

Baaba Maal is one of the finest singers in the world, and he's currently on brilliant live form - as shown by those memorable impromptu collaborations with anyone from Toumani Diabate to Franz Ferdinand at the Africa Express shows. Yet he hasn't recorded a new album for seven years, which presumably explains this limited-edition retrospective acoustic live set. It's taken from performances over the past 10 years, many featuring the exquisite kora work of the late Kaouding Cissoko, and includes some impressive tracks, from that lyrical favourite Baayo to a hypnotic, improvised workout on the harsh-edged Farba, previously only released on cassette in Africa. Then there's the gently charming, kora-backed Fanta, the well-worn and more slushy Cherie, and a virtuoso collaboration with Jamaican guitar hero Ernest Ranglin on Koni, which they performed together on Maal's last live recording, nine years ago. It's currently available only on vinyl or as a download from baabamaal.tv, but is well worth checking out as we wait for something new. Those Africa Express collaborations would make a great start.
