Resisting the tide of repression that threatens the teaching of Black history, we should look to that past to understand the ongoing processes that have shaped our world. Our current predicament, marked by extreme inequalities, everyday violence, militarism, and political strife derives in part from the history of colonial conquest, slavery, and imperial warfare. Our struggles for freedom and dignity emerge from that history, too. By understanding it, we might discern the scope, force, direction, and likelihood of the changes ahead—and be guided by the example and the wisdom of our ancestors. Vincent Brown is the Charles Warren Professor of American History and Professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University. He has published two prize-winning books about the history of slavery: The Reaper’s Garden: Death and Power in the World of Atlantic Slavery (2008) and Tacky’s Revolt: The Story of an Atlantic Slave War (2020). The author of numerous articles and reviews in scholarly journals, he is also Principal Investigator and Curator for the animated thematic map Slave Revolt in Jamaica, 1760-1761: A Cartographic Narrative (2013), he was Producer and Director of Research for the award-winning television documentary Herskovits at the Heart of Blackness (2009), broadcast nationally on the PBS series Independent Lens, he was the executive producer and host for The Bigger Picture (2022), co-produced with WNET for PBS Digital Studios, and he was executive producer, writer, and host for How Do You Remember the Days of Slavery? (2024). He is co-founder of Timestamp Media, which explores the history that connects people and places across the world.

In 1971, the United States cut the dollar loose from gold and gambled the entire global economy on a single question: what gives a piece of paper its value once the metal underneath is gone? The answer turned out to be oil — and the deal that made it happen was kept secret for forty-one years.

This is the story of the petrodollar: how a moment of weakness became the most durable instrument of power any nation has ever wielded. From the collapse of Bretton Woods and the Nixon Shock, to the 1973 oil embargo that quadrupled prices overnight, to the chain-smoking Wall Street bond trader who flew secretly into Saudi Arabia in 1974 to strike a deal that would anchor the dollar to the world's most essential commodity.

But this isn't just a story about American advantage. It's a story about a trap. We follow the petrodollars on their journey — from oil importers, into Gulf treasuries, through Western banks, and out as cheap dollar loans to the developing world. Then we watch Paul Volcker raise interest rates to nearly twenty percent and the bill reset overnight, triggering Latin America's "lost decade," sovereign defaults, and more than twenty million people pushed into extreme poverty.

We separate documented history from myth: the real secret Treasury bond arrangement versus the viral "single 1974 oil treaty" that never actually existed. We look honestly at the contested "petrodollar war theory" surrounding Iraq and Libya — what's proven, what's speculation, and why the truth refuses to be neat. And we examine whether the system is finally cracking, with the dollar's reserve share at a three-decade low, the rise of the petroyuan, and central banks quietly stacking gold.

Steve Cokely (June 17, 1952 - April 11, 2012) was an American political researcher and lecturer who lectured nationally on political and economic issues relating especially to the African American community.

Steve Cokely was also a futurologist who commented extensively on water conservation, organic farming, and communal living. Cokely gave over 5,000 lectures on the topic of global warming and corporate conspiracies, the Trilateral Commission, The Bilderberg Group, Rothchilds, Rockefellers, Boule, etc.

Cokely's research delved into the history of Marcus Garvey, the Black Panthers and other areas of African-American history.

Cokely lectured at many college campuses nationally and was also known for his conspiracy theories involving the Black Male elite organization known as the Sigma Pi Phi and the Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr by the hands of Rev.Jesse Jackson and the C.I.A.

Cokely was assistant to the special committee on rules under Mayor Harold Washington. He gained notoriety when he served as special assistant to the former mayor of Chicago, Eugene Sawyer.

Cokely was criticized for teaching that Jewish doctors were using the AIDS virus in an attempted genocide against Africans. His comments created a nationally publicized controversy in 1988 and he was dismissed from his position as aide to Sawyer.

When in 1990 Illinois Governor James Thompson signed an agreement to open an Israeli Aircraft Industries plant in Rockford, Cokely was an outspoken opponent. He argued that Black leaders in Illinois should oppose Israeli war industries because of their military support for the Apartheid system in South Africa.

Cokely gained the national spotlight again in 1996 after he was scheduled to speak at "Our Roots Run Deep", a Black History Month lecture series in New York City hosted by the Warner Music Group. Also scheduled were Al Sharpton, Conrad Muhammad, Jimmy Castor, Hannibal Lokumbe and Dick Gregory. The Jewish Defense Organization objected, organizing a call-in campaign to Warner Brothers and threatening a boycott. The Anti-Defamation League and the New York Post also objected to Cokely (as well as Sharpton and Muhammad) speaking at the event. Warner removed Cokely and Muhammad without issuing a press release.

Dr. Julia Hare’s work has brought her many awards and honors including Educator of the Year for Washington, D.C. by the Junior Chamber of Commerce and World Book Encyclopedia in coordination with American University; The Abe Lincoln Award for Outstanding Broadcasting, The Carter G. Woodson Education Award, The Association of Black Social Workers’ Harambee Award; the Scholar of the Year Award from the Association of African Historians; and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Black Writers and Artists Union. Hare has been inducted into the Hall of Fame of her high school alma mater, Booker T. Washington High, was given a Presidential citation from the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education and was named one of the ten most influential African Americans in the San Francisco Bay Area.

During graduate school, Hare taught elementary school in Chicago, Illinois integrating music into the student’s lessons. Following a move to California, Hare served as the director of educational programs at the Oakland Museum and later hosted talk shows for both ABC television and KSFO radio stations. She also served as the public relations director in the local federal housing program in San Francisco.

Her formal education includes a B.A. in music from Langston University of Langston, Oklahoma; a M.A. degree in music education from Roosevelt University located in Chicago, Illinois and a Ph.D. in education from the California Coast University in Santa Ana, California.
