"The phenomenon of peer pressure and its impact on
academic achievement has reached catastrophic propor-
tions. It has now reached a point that to do well academical-
ly in school is to act white and risk being called a nerd ora
brainiac. For males, the peer pressure is so great, you may be
called a sissy. Can you imagine the ancestor’s children, who
built the first civilization and taught the ancient Greek
scholars, attributing academic achievement to being
White? Please do not discern this solely to integration.
There are schools that only African-American students at-
tend, there are no White students, and they still say to be
smart is to be white.

Our students go to many kinds of schools. Some attend
all-Black schools in low-income neighborhoods, others at-
tend all-Black schools in middle-income communities,
others attend integrated, elite, magnet high schools where
admission is based on a test, some attend integrated schools
in the suburbs, and lastly some attend coed, homogeneous,
private schools. This book is written for students in all five
circumstances. In Philadelphia, the audience described ex-
periences from all five settings. They were surprised that in
the latter three environments—magnet schools, integrated
suburban schools, and private schools—negative peer
pressure still existed for their children. Many parents work-
ed very hard to live in more affluent neighborhoods and pay
tuition so their children could be ‘‘inspired”’ by a positive
peer group. Other parents like Namorahor my wife and I
were able to have our children admitted into elite magnet
schools, only to find this silent killer there too."

Jawanza Kunjufu is the author of over 25 books including national bestsellers, Countering the Conspiracy to Destroy Black Boys, State of Emergency: We Must Save African American Males, Solutions for Black America, Keeping Black Boys Out of Special Education, Raising Black Boys and his most recent, 200 Plus Educational Strategies to Teach Children of Color. His work has been featured in Ebony and Essence magazines and he has been a guest on BET and Oprah.
He has been guest speaker at most colleges and universities throughout the US, and has served as a consultant to most urban school districts. He has preached in numerous churches and taught seminary for eight years to doctoral students at Union Theological Seminary.

His other books include Black Students: Middle Class Teachers, Satan, I’m Taking Back My Health!, Developing Strong Black Male Ministries, An African Centered Response to Ruby Payne’s Poverty Theory, A Culture of Respect.

Kunjufu attended both the Morgan State University and the Towson State University exchange programs from 1972 to 1973. He went on to Illinois State University where he earned his BS in 1974. He went on to get his PhD from Union Graduate School in 1984.

Washington, MA, ethicist and author of Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Experimentation from Colonial Times to the Present, which won a National Book Critics Circle Award, will outline the historical roots of racial mistreatment in the U.S. medical research arena. She discusses contemporary challenges to ethical research and health care, from the elision of informed consent to the neoeugenic policies, through the lens of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This event was held as part of the "Racism, Medicine, and Bioethics" event series in honor of Black History Month, 2021. Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics and the Tuskegee University National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care partnered in organizing this series to examine the history of racism in medicine, its impact on Black individuals and the Black community, and to gather solutions for a healthier future from experts and thought leaders in history, health policy and law, social justice, and public health and medicine.

The Syliphone Years
Au lendemain de la décolonisation de la Guinée, le nouveau président Sékou Touré s'affirme comme le promoteur d'une réhabilitation de l'authenticité africaine face au déni colonial des cultures colonisées. Dans une perspective d'unité nationale et panafricaine, les artistes obtiennent le statut de fonctionnaire d'état et sont encouragés par le gouvernement à composer et écrire de nouvelles chansons dans un style plus moderne, tout en puisant dans le répertoire des récits historiques et des musiques ancestrales de l'aire Mandingue. Le fer de lance de cette politique n'était autre qu'un label d'état, le label Syliphone, dont les enregistrements sont de formidables témoignages du dynamisme et des richesses culturelles d'un peuple à l'aube de son indépendance qui porte au monde la voix de sa révolution.

► Bembeya Jazz National
Le Bembeya Jazz National, mosaïque des traditions guinéennes, est fondé en 1961. En gagnant aux deux premières biennales (1964 et 1966), cet orchestre, issu des groupes régionaux, est invité en tournée à Cuba et promu orchestre national en 1966. Modèle de tous les orchestres ouest-africains, il s'inspirait de la musique Mandingue réadaptée aux guitares électriques avec des rythmes évoquant la rumba zaïroise et les orchestres cubains soutenus par une section de cuivres. Son rôle est de jouer tous les rythmes du pays. Un de ses membres historiques Achken Kaba, s'en explique ainsi : "la Guinée est musicalement un résumé de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, et même au-delà. Dans le Fouta, la flûte et la vièle des Peul font le lien avec le monde arabe. Sur la Basse-Côte, on retrouve les mêmes danses qu'au Libéria ou dans le sud de la Côte d'Ivoire et du Ghana, et jusqu'au Nigeria. Les Guinéens forestiers ont une alimentation, une corpulence et une culture qui les rapprochent même des Congolais."
Dans sa longue épopée jusque dans les années 90, le Bembeya a vu défiler de nombreux grands musiciens parmi lesquels son fondateur et chanteur légendaire Aboubacar Demba Camara, accompagné du guitariste non moins légendaire Sékou "Bembeya" Diabaté "Diamond fingers", puis plus tard notamment du jeune chanteur et futur star Sékouba Bambino.

China runs large trade surpluses with the United States. Typically these funds would be returned to the US as capital investments, either through buys of fixed assets, securities, or lending.

China, however, is liquidating stakes in companies in the United States, and is selling off its portfolio of Treasury bonds.

These two trends are resulting in enormous imbalances in Balance of Payments, which much be re-balanced via China's central banking activities. China is clearly recycling giant capital pools from the United States for investment purposes inside China, and among China's top trading partners.

And because the US dollars are never returned to the capital markets, it is also clear that China and the BRICS countries are setting up their own trading and economic bloc, funded largely with US debt instruments.

(Editor note: At about the 2:00 mark, I misspoke. The US ran a trade deficit of approximately $800 billion, not surplus. Apologies.)
