People & Power investigates the environmental consequences of palm oil plantations in equatorial Africa.

There are few products so ubiquitous as palm oil. You can find its derivatives in chocolate, shampoo, toothpaste, detergent, ice cream, floor polish and a host of other products filling supermarket shelves.

Extracted from the fruit of the tropically-grown oil palm tree (Elaeis guineensis), it has become so versatile and sought after that the growing economies of Indonesia and Malaysia, the world's two largest producers, make some $40bn a year from its production and export.

Given that by 2020 global demand for palm oil is expected to double and then triple by 2050, it is no wonder that other developing countries, especially in sub-Saharan West Africa where the tree originates, have been looking enviously at Southeast Asia and hoping to emulate that success.

But palm oil cultivation does not come cost-free. If not done sustainably, say conservationists, it can have disastrous consequences for people and the environment. In Indonesia, for example, it has played a major role in deforestation which has seen the loss of more than 6 million hectares of primary forest over the last 15 years.

As rainforests are home to least half of this planet's species of plants, animals and insects, the negative impact on global biodiversity can only be imagined. In addition, indigenous communities are also destroyed as people who have lived happily off the forest's resources for generations, often do not own the land (at least not in a form recognised by governments, corporations and their lawyers) and are frequently displaced to make way for new plantations.

Boosting Cameroon's economy
It is against this background that the Central and West African state of Cameroon has been trying to get a palm oil industry off - or rather into - the ground. Its President Paul Biya, who has held office since 1982, has been looking for ways to give Cameroon's economy a boost.

His country is not as poverty-stricken as some on the continent. It has some modest oil resources and favourable conditions for agriculture and is comparatively stable politically, but it is not immune from many of the problems associated with developing nations, from chronically high unemployment and an inequitable distribution of income to corruption and inadequate public infrastructure.

Cameroon is also over-reliant on imports, which makes it susceptible to rising prices and food insecurity. According to the UN, more than 40 percent of the population are living under the poverty line, while over one-third of its children are suffering from chronic malnutrition.

Palm oil then, would seem to offer good prospects for additional growth. The tree is native to the region and the climate is perfect for its cultivation. And of course, there are plenty of international agribusiness conglomerates looking for suitable places in West Africa in which to replicate the stellar profits enjoyed by the industry in Asia.

Senegalese-American artist Akon is a five-time Grammy nominee who has sold over 35 million records worldwide and has collaborated with some of the biggest names in popular music, such as Michael Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga and David Guetta.

The musician, songwriter, and producer, who was born in the US but spent much of his childhood in Senegal, is also an activist and a philanthropist - and he has turned his sights on helping Africa.

How many African-Americans do you know actually consider Africa as a vacation spot? Not one... Even just for knowledge, just to know where they came from, just to get an idea of what that is; there is so much fear instilled in them that they wouldn't even want to go there to visit. You mention Africa, they start shaking.

Akon

His current ambitious project, "Akon Lighting Africa," is working to bring solar-powered electricity to Africans in 49 countries by the end of 2020.

Akon is also an ambassador for the non-profit organisation Peace One Day. Last year, he and actor Jude Law brought their celebrity power to Goma to a concert to promote peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

But Akon has also caused controversy through his performance style and his lyrics.

Akon talks to Al Jazeera about running his musical career as a business; his projects - both philanthropic and artistic; singing songs for peace and whether he thinks it can really make an impact; and being an African in the US.

Au lendemain de la décolonisation de la Guinée, le nouveau président Sékou Touré s'affirme comme le promoteur d'une réhabilitation de l'authenticité africaine face au déni colonial des cultures colonisées. Dans une perspective d'unité nationale et panafricaine, les artistes obtiennent le statut de fonctionnaire d'état et sont encouragés par le gouvernement à composer et écrire de nouvelles chansons dans un style plus moderne tout en puisant dans le répertoire des récits historiques et des musiques ancestrales de l'aire Mandingue. Le fer de lance de cette politique n'était autre qu'un label d'état, le label Syliphone, dont les enregistrements sont de formidables témoignages du dynamisme et des richesses culturelles d'un peuple à l'aube de son indépendance qui porte au monde la voix de sa révolution.

► Bembeya Jazz National
Le Bembeya Jazz National, mosaïque des traditions guinéennes, est fondé en 1961. En gagnant aux deux premières biennales (1964 et 1966), cet orchestre, issu des groupes régionaux, est invité en tournée à Cuba et promu orchestre national en 1966. Modèle de tous les orchestres ouest-africains, il s'inspirait de la musique Mandingue réadaptée aux guitares électriques avec des rythmes évoquant la rumba zaïroise et les orchestres cubains soutenus par une section de cuivres. Son rôle est de jouer tous les rythmes du pays. Un de ses membres historiques Achken Kaba, s'en explique ainsi : "la Guinée est musicalement un résumé de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, et même au-delà. Dans le Fouta, la flûte et la vièle des Peul font le lien avec le monde arabe. Sur la Basse-Côte, on retrouve les mêmes danses qu'au Libéria ou dans le sud de la Côte d'Ivoire et du Ghana, et jusqu'au Nigeria. Les Guinéens forestiers ont une alimentation, une corpulence et une culture qui les rapprochent même des Congolais."
Dans sa longue épopée jusque dans les années 90, le Bembeya a vu défiler de nombreux grands musiciens parmi lesquels son fondateur et chanteur légendaire Aboubacar Demba Camara, accompagné du guitariste non moins légendaire Sékou "Bembeya" Diabaté "Diamond fingers", puis plus tard notamment du jeune chanteur et futur star Sékouba Bambino qui est à l'honneur dans le Volume 2 : "Bembeya Jazz : Les années 80".
