⁣Kirango is an old village on the banks of the Niger river, 35 km from Ségou. The village is inhabited by Bamana (farmers) and Bozo/Somono (fishermen). Both ethnic groups celebrate their masquerades, each in their own way.

The masquerade of the Bamana ('sogo bò' - the animal comes out) is organized by the 'ton' (youth association) every jear, in June. It comprises ‘sogow’ (animals): masks and large puppets that represent spirits, animals (domestic, wild, or mythical), and human personages.

They are accompanied by drumming, singing and dancing.

The Marimba and music Currulao from the Kmtyu of the Pacific Coast of colombia meets with the ancestral homeland of Senegal and the ancestral Balafon. In our studies, the Kmtyu of the Pacific Coast have theorized the Marimba is a descendant of the Balafon, and was reconstructed in the Choco rainforest when our ancestors were trafficked there. We also have a large ancestry from the ancient Mali empire in our Abibiman genepool, to include Senegambia. ⁣The marimba player is Hugo Candelario, from Guapi, Cauca, and one of the country's best marimba players.

Experiencia maravillosa el poder estar en Senegal, compartiendo nuestras raíces musicales con los maestros Africanos….gracias a "El viaje de la Marimba”.

In this episode, I take up a request from one of our dear subscribers to Powered by Ancestry and then dive into what's commonly referred to as totems--an animal held to have spiritual significance and adopted as an emblem--or what I call spiritual animals. Using my Akan folks' deep knowledge as a guide, I walk viewers through some essential facts of said spiritual animals and how they operate in the life of a person. Note: the leopard is the "spirit animal" for both my maternal and paternal clans, though I focus more on the latter in this episode, and a correction: the disembodied ↄbosom associated with lake Bosomtwe is called Akwasi Bosomtwe Akowuakra, not Kwaku Bosomtwe. Enjoy!
