Jamaica was once the world’s leading exporter of bauxite, which is the ore from which aluminum is made, but decades of mining have taken a toll on the land and the people. With reserves depleted, the government is now pushing to move mining operations into the most ecologically sensitive part of the island known as Cockpit Country. The people of Cockpit Country fought off the British in the 1700s and now they're conjuring the warrior spirit of their ancestors to take that fight to the mining companies.

WHEN THE JOY COMES-TOUR tickets: https://kj.de/artist/4684/Akua_Naru.html
"My Mother’s Daughter" is the first single release off Akua Naru’s third and forthcoming studio album "...The Blackest Joy" (Spring 2018). The song, at times dark and mystical, at others bright and full of hope, is a rich narrative of black womanhood, agency, West African spirituality, lineage, and sisterhood. With West African influences, as evidenced by the song's introduction and its additional vocals (spoken & sung completely in Mina), Naru, once again, merges genres along the black music tradition and glides effortlessly between soul, jazz, and hip-hop.
Filmed in Lome, Togo, West Africa and directed by Hamburg based artist Joachim Zunke, the video, to be continued, highlights Akua Naru, the mystic/ the traveler, and documents the marriage of her inner and outer worlds. A visual homage to black womanhood on the African continent and in the diaspora.

The Blackest Joy" (Printemps 2018).

Prior to colonialism, food production in Africa was in the hands of African farmers who grew crops mainly for food production. Many explorers to Africa were more focused on acquiring and shipping raw materials to the western world and considered this the most efficient use of their resources. Over time this way of conducting business became expensive and they sought to diversify ways to increase their profits. More often than not, private companies such as the Royal Niger Company, Imperial British East Africa Company, and British South Africa Company incurred high costs in trying to set up a new administration that would protect their interests. These new administrations often introduced tax systems and laws that forced local farmers to grow crops they could openly sell on the local market in order to pay their taxes. This led to the introduction of cash crop agriculture in many parts of Africa.

Nnamdi Kanu is the leader of a separatist group calling for an independent State of Biafra. His followers call themselves the 'Indigenous People of Biafra' and they've not given up their dream of their own homeland in southeastern Nigeria. The region has seen a surge in attacks, with some 130 police officers killed this year alone. In May, Nigeria's security forces launched an operation to quell the violence which many fear may lead to a new war.
But the conflict between Biafran separatists and the Nigerian government is much older than this recent outbreak.
Meanwhile, reports from Cameroon indicate English speaking separatist militias have joined forces with their Nigerian counterparts. A development that has led to fears of an acceleration in violence. The Biafran secessionists and the Ambazonian Defence Force in southwestern Cameroon share a common border, and a joint purpose: to establish their own states. They say they are already sharing weapons.
One way to defuse the crisis in Nigeria would be good governance. Yet for some in the region it was actually the election of President Muhammadu Buhari, himself a veteran of the Biafran war, that reawakened calls for independence. Now the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu has only heightened tensions.
