The United States has a decades-long problem of shortages for affordable medicines that treat serious diseases, including cancer and diabetes. But hundreds of plants in China and India are ready to supply low-cost drugs to the American market, just as they do for hospitals across Asia and the world.

Drug companies, hospitals, and clinics in the US are highly incentivized to run shortages of the least expensive medicines, as patients have no choice but to switch to more costly treatments. And regulators and inspectors for the Food and Drug Administration are highly recruited by drug companies, which reduces how many inspectors are available, and how many foreign plants can be inspected and approved. The FDA is currently short of hundreds of plant inspectors, most acutely so in Asia, which is where all the low-cost drugs are made.

Former Mayor of the Midvaal Municipality Bongani Baloyi has announced that he is joining the MK Party and deregistering his Xiluva party.

Baloyi made the announcement in Soweto, on Thursday.

The move follows a poor showing by the Xiluva party in the May elections.

Baloyi who has moved from the DA to ActionSA before forming Xiluva, follows EFF Deputy President Floyd Shivambo and SARA's Colleen Makhubele to the country's third largest party.

The Former Xiluva Party Leader, Bongani Baloyi joins us this afternoon.

A Chinese firm is mining gold in an endangered UNESCO World Heritage site in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Okapi wildlife reserve in the DRC has been a protected reserve for decades. But a Chinese firm struck a deal with some DRC government officials and got a permit to mine gold in the protected land. The officials redrew the reserve's boundaries to allow the Chinese firm to mine inside the reserve. Locals say that they are suffering because of the Chinese mine, and that the protected area is getting devastated.
